Grayson Jones is back—and this time, he's (mostly) ready.

The state debate will take place in Des Moines, Iowa, with 24 schools battling it out in a single-elimination bracket. Lose once, you're out. The final round will feature the top three teams, but only two will advance to regionals. First place wins a dinner with the governor. (Yes, the actual governor. Probably with real silverware.)

The judges? A panel of retired teachers, state representatives, and one former national debate coach who, according to the notes, has zero tolerance for nonsense.

The topic? The 1960s.

And each team must submit a 20-page written report on the decade—due before the first round begins. No pressure.

The countdown is on. They've got thirty days. One shot at redemption. And possibly—if they pull it off—steak with the governor.

For Grayson, this whole thing is more than just research and rebuttals. His ADHD means his brain works like a pinball machine in a lightning storm. Sometimes it's a superpower, sometimes it's just loud. But debate has taught him how to channel the chaos. Sort of. (Okay, he still forgets where he put his socks. But he can quote the Voting Rights Act under pressure, and that has to count for something.)

Now, as the team scrambles to survive mock debates, organize mountains of index cards, navigate group texts, stay awake through documentaries, and avoid punching anyone important—they're also learning what it really means to work together.

They've come a long way since Grayson showed up expecting cookies.
