The Battle of Long Tan

Battle of Long Tan was one of the most significant engagements involving Australian forces during the Vietnam War, fought on 18 August 1966 in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan in Phuoc Tuy Province.

It involved D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, which numbered just over 100 soldiers, facing a much larger force of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops estimated at several thousand.

Despite being heavily outnumbered and caught in a monsoon storm that reduced visibility, the Australians held their position through disciplined fire support, artillery coordination from Nui Dat base, and resupply by armoured personnel carriers.

The battle lasted several hours and resulted in heavy enemy casualties while the Australian unit managed to maintain cohesion and prevent being overrun.

It became a defining moment in Australia’s military history in Vietnam, symbolising resilience, tactical coordination, and the importance of artillery support in jungle warfare.

The engagement also strengthened the reputation of Australian forces among allies, though it came at the cost of 18 Australian lives and many wounded. Today, Long Tan is commemorated annually as a key event in Australia’s remembrance of the Vietnam War. It remains central to Australian military remembrance ceremonies today.
